Potential Students

Please read the following before contacting me

At this time I am only considering students who are actively enrolled in a MEAC approved midwifery program, live within 30 minutes of Kalamazoo, and are available for an on call lifestyle.  I have a ten birth trial period before I enter into a student/preceptor commitment. My commitment to you as a preceptor requires 150% commitment from you as a student. This means a regular re-evaluation of our student/midwife relationship and both of our independent and mutual midwifery goals.  Being prompt for appointments, dressing in a way that is professional and conservative, and having the ability to quietly engage without needing direct interaction is a must. As time goes on and you move further into your studies and clinical components, I will teach you how to engage with clients. Please understand that the process of becoming a CPM will take many years. If you are hoping to be done in a few years, I am not the preceptor for you.

Some of the reasons for MEAC schooling are:
  • I am a graduate from Midwives College of Utah and I support formal midwifery education.
  • I have experienced the benefits of having a solid didactic foundation along with a clinical preceptorship.
  • The climate of midwifery is shifting. The recommendation by ACOG and US MERA is that by 2020 Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) must have formal MEAC schooling.  In fact, Michigan has legislation for direct entry midwives which requires graduation from a MEAC school to obtain a license for practice.

I hope this direction helps. If you would like me to consider you as a potential student, please email me your midwifery plan.

Blessings,

Emily Likens CPM
